The Best of Micro-link Hair Extensions: The Key Things You Need to Know.

What are Micro-link Extensions?

Out of all the types of hair extensions, I believe that micro-link extensions give the most natural look. Also known as micro-ring or micro-bead extensions, micro-link extensions are the smallest and most undetectable non-glue hair extensions which combine the strands of your natural hair with the extension strands using tiny beads or metal tubes (the links). The links are usually made of either aluminum or copper, with or without a thin non-slip silicone layer inside them for cushioning and better grip.

Micro-link extensions are one of the OG types of hair extensions. Some people (and I am one of them) also feel they’re the safest hair extension technique because they don’t use any type of adhesive, glue, bond, heat, stitching, or chemicals.

Can you DIY your micro-link installation?

Micro-link extensions are a technique that was developed in a salon, so unless you have eyes at the back of your head, I recommend that you head over to a professional stylist to have them installed. You can decide to fit in your micro-links at home, but it is a pretty tricky technique so you’ll need to maintain some accuracy and it will take longer to do by yourself. But don’t worry; it’ll get much easier for you to do once you understand how it works.

How to Care for Your Micro-link Extensions.

Micro-links aren’t applied using any sort of glue or adhesive. Therefore, there is a need to keep the roots of your hair clean and oil-free through regular and proper washing.

Micro-links wash routine: Wet your hair and gently massage shampoo in between your hair attachments followed by a thorough rinse. You should use a nourishing shampoo like the Bossette Shampoo. Apply the Bossette Conditioner from mid-length to the ends of your hair and also follow this with a thorough rinse. The same technique for conditioning applies when you wish to use masks or treatments on your hair. This is because if you apply conditioners, masks, treatments, or any oily products to the roots of your hair, this could trigger hair extensions slippage.

Apply conditioning sprays and oils from mid-length to the ends of your hair after washing to keep your hair healthy, glossy, and moisturized.

You can use a blow dryer on your micro-links. Start by drying your roots first to make your extensions less likely to slip when you begin blow-drying the lengths with a round brush.

Brush your extensions twice daily to keep them tangle-free—especially if you’re keeping either straight or wavy textures. Use a soft bristle brush without those little bubbles on top of the bristles to brush your hair from roots to ends (yes, you can do this from the links). However, if you’re using a regular comb, then begin combing from below the links.

If you’re keeping curly or kinky textures, use a spray bottle to spritz the hair with water and finger-detangle before brushing or combing.

At night, braid your hair or tie it into a messy bun and use a satin scarf or bonnet to keep it protected. Sleeping with your hair out can damage the hair quality and make detangling a headache.

Pro-tip of the day: If your hair is shorter than 4 inches long, I recommend that you wait a couple of months and let your hair grow out before installing micro-link extensions. This is so that it’ll be much easier for the extensions to blend seamlessly with your natural hair.

Pro-tip of the day: Use a flat iron on your wig or wefts following this entire process. The heat will seal in the silicone spritz and give your revived hair a really glossy finish.
